ABOUT THE COFFEE AND THE FARMERS

Finca Monte Sión is a family owned farm, where coffee has been grown since 1907.  Dr. Luis Urrutia and his wife Lilliana are third generation coffee growers. 

Luis is also a cardiologist, and he began  an ambitious health-care program for his coffee workers and their families. This includes a mobile medical centre and health and literary education facilities in neighbouring villages.. 

Luis strongly believes that, if correctly managed, "coffee forests" are essential to sustain native wildlife and plants.  The farm, which supports over 700 workers, directly or indirectly, meets all of the Rainforest Alliance’s standards and is experimenting with better ways to incorporate coffee mill byproducts into the soil.

Luis helped organize the Sustainable Certified Coffee Association of El Salvador, which has already landed contracts in Taiwan and Japan.
