OCFCU's 23,000 farmer members grow their coffee in southwest Ethiopia at altitudes of up to 2,000 metres. Eight of OCFCU's 35 co-operatives are Fairtrade certified.
Ethiopia's coffee trees are the original Arabica varieties and define specialty coffee. The coffee we have selected is heirloom, forest-grown, organic, bird-friendly and small farmer produced. Harvest is done by hand and organic compost is used.
Tadesse Meskela is General Manager of the OCFCU and is the central character in the film "Black Gold". Tadesse says:
"Fairtrade is not just a buying and selling process. It is creating a global family."
